What is Agile?

Agile is a set of principles and values for software development:

  • Individuals and interactions over processes and tools
  • Working software over comprehensive documentation
  • Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
  • Responding to change over following a plan

The idea being that while there is value in the items on the right, Agile places more value in the bolded items on the left.

Agile is a mindset shift; a way to work and collaborate.

What is Scrum?

Scrum is the most commonly used Agile approach. It focuses on delivering the business value in the shortest time; i.e. how you do twice the amount of work in half the amount of time. Agile methodology delivers software on a regular basis for feedback, while Scrum delivers the software after each sprint.

Why Has Agile Been Instrumental in Ecover Global’s Success?

Imagine the herculean task of building a fully HIPAA-compliant Patient Engagement App. It’s easy to get lost in the details….It’s easy for product releases to be delayed. The Agile methodology teaches that while a high-level product roadmap can be developed, the work can be broken down into two-week “sprints.” Those sprints can be used to release various modules of a product as they are completed instead of waiting for everything to be completed at once. This allows for greater speed to market, as well as the ability to gather user feedback more quickly. That feedback then can be used earlier in the process to ideate and improve.

How has Agile Been Applied at Ecover Global?

Ecover embodies the Agile mindset and has built a culture of empowerment, transparency, and accountability. The entire Ecover team has been trained in Agile and Scrum by Maria Matarelli and the team of experienced Agile experts at Formula Ink. Each full-time member of the team has earned the following certifications:

Some Ecover Team members have also completed their Certified Agile Leadership (CAL) as well as their Certified Agile Marketing Specialist (CAMS) certification.

While using Personal Agility, the team began checking in with each other weekly, in pairs, and connected on a personal level. They have worked to know their team members on a deeper level, and the visibility of using the Personal Agility SystemTM led to more fulfillment in what the team members were able to achieve. There is also shared visibility into the company goals.

Results

Ben and his team’s original roadmap included achieving a $35 million valuation by the end of their first 3 years in business. They are excited to have achieved that valuation in just 18 months! They believe that putting Agile into practice helped achieve that goal much faster.

They were also able to add two additional enterprise platforms to their existing Patient Engagement Software, which allowed them to penetrate new verticals and expand market reach.

“When you actually understand what really matters to each other, by looking at each other’s Priorities Maps while using Personal Agility, you can more effectively hold each other accountable to their goals in their overall life,” said Ben. “We had visibility into each other’s Forces Maps where we could see what was important to each other. This process increased the effectiveness of how the leadership team set the tone for the entire organization in getting business results. Celebrating each other’s growth while reflecting on smaller wins allowed for clarity in necessary ongoing steps and actions for continuous improvement.”

The Ecover Global team has integrated Agile in a holistic way from business through to their personal lives. This has allowed them to achieve goals personally as well as professionally.
